5th July 2011 - COOBER PEDY

Spent the day catching up with chores and exploring around Coober Pedy.  Walked over to the TI then up the main street, calling into a couple of different Opal shops.  Talked to a really interesting opal shop owner who was very informative.  Could have easily walked away with a beautiful necklace valued at $450.00 but didn’t……really controlled myself.   Then it was off to a tour of “FayesUnderground House”, which was built by Faye by hand over a 10 year period …amazing….!!!  quite unbelievable to think that people actually live underground.  Temperature in the house is controlled by airflow through shafts and it is very pleasant.  Also had a look at the Greek Orthodox Church and a wander around Boot Hill Cemetery. We also stopped for a little “noodling” and I have a small collection of opal pieces in bits of stone. Not worth anything but interesting just the same.  Check out the picture of the Caravan parking – tree each side of the van and no room for the awning to be opened.  Barry did a remarkable job slotting the van into such a tight spot. An early night tonight and heading up to Kulgera tomorrow before heading into Yulara on Thursday.
